I can be the most productive person in the world sometimes. I work hard, work fast, and do a great job. But sometimes I find myself just wasting time! On my way home from work I make mental lists of what I’ll do the second I get home. I’m so excited, I can’t wait to pull into my garage… 1) go for a run 2) clean the bathtub 3) throw a load of laundry in 4) write that blog post that’s been bouncing around in my head 5) read a book 6) do handstands 7) do pilates or at least stretch real good
Then the list of what I swear I won’t do: 1) do not watch tv! It just rots your brain & you have better things to do 2) don’t snack! If you’re hungry, just make dinner earlier 3) don’t spend two hours on Pinterest 4) don’t spend the next two hours after Pinterest reading blogs that are boring and/or stupid 5) don’t you dare go to bed without washing your face!
What do I end up doing? Telling myself I need a little break after work so pour a glass of wine, bust out the bread & cheese and get lost in Pinterest, boring blogs, and bad tv, then I’m so tired I only have energy to brush my teeth. A whole five hours passed with nothing to show for it. Ugh!
Don’t get me wrong…a dance party in your living room with wine after work is always a good idea. Being productive 24/7 is not the way to live your life, either. There’s a balance, people, but I usually can’t find it. I have great intentions of being productive in the evenings, and being productive truly does make me a happier girl. To accomplish things, cross them off my list, have the running endorphins…it’s really great. But I tend to do too much. I think it’s not okay to relax and not accomplish things every hour of every day. So I’ve been trying to be more balanced in my evening to do lists, and realistic with my goals. I know my trends, now. My habits. If I’m to go running after work, it needs to be right when I get home. Say hi to the cats, change my clothes, get out that door. Fast. Or I won’t do it. Once I exercise, I’m totally motivated to do other productive things.
1) Go running
2) Intense stretching while checking out Pinterest on my ipad & drinking water (see how balanced I am? Pinterest isn’t always a waste of time!)
3) Do those darn dishes I didn’t do the night before, or a load of laundry, or clean the bathroom. But only one cleaning thing an evening, not the whole house
4) Blog with a gigantic glass of wine next to me (duh)
5) Eat dinner in front of the tv & even dessert if I want because I totally worked out (just not the entire tub of Ben & Jerry’s. Not that I ever do that.)
6) Read a bit in bed then sleep like a baby
See how much better that is? I still don’t hit the mark every night, but getting out to run immediately is totally key for me. It really helps motivate me to be productive enough and not just waste time all night. How about you, what do you do to keep motivated? I could use some pointers!
