There are tons of places to eat & drink in Gaslamp in Downtown San Diego. I happened to have a coupon to Viva Bar + Kitchen, so decided to give it a shot. It’s on 4th, right next to Horton Plaza, so a bit away from the main drag. I was a bit worried when it was virtually empty when we got there. But soon realized I had nothing to fear.
The deal was, we each got two specialty drinks and two appetizers. Don’t mind if I do! Their specialty drinks consisted of muddled berries & herbs and quality liquors. It was seriously hard to choose. I’m a vodka girl, so chose between a couple tasty sounding ones. Their flavor combos were crazy. Loved them! Then we ordered an appetizer, the Bistro Filetto. I’m embarrassed to say we ate most of it before I even thought to take a picture. It was so good!
It was spicy, flavorful, juicy. Great, now I’m hungry. Nothing else on the specialty cocktail menu intrigued me, so I just told the waiter things I like. Vodka, not sweet, berries, maybe something muddled? I’ve done this at plenty of places, but they usually bring me back a vodka cranberry. Thanks bozo, where’s your sense of adventure? Your pride in your craft? It annoys me, frankly. But this time…wow, did that bartender deliver.
I don’t even know what was in it. But it was amazing. Muddled strawberries and other berries, with muddled herbs. Just crazy good! I think I need to start going to swankier places to get an awesome bartender.
We shared an entree that was super good, wolfed that sucker down, then contemplated sharing street tacos. I wish we did. I think next time I’ll just order a bunch of the tapas. Seriously, so good!
By the time we left the place was packed, people waiting outside to even sit at the bar. I don’t venture downtown that often, but totally want to go back to this place!
